NGO Coalition to Monitor Local Elections in Kosovo

Coalition of the Kosovo nongovernmental organizations “Democracy in Action” presented its initiative to monitor 2009 local elections. Coalition representatives said that it also plans to monitor the work of the Central Election Commission (CEC).

“Once again, we addressed a letter to CEC to allow us to monitor its work and we hope that this time we will manage to get a positive reply for this call”, stated Coalition’s representative Driton Tafallari.

Debate on Law on Prevention of Discrimination Announced

The Joint Committee for Human Rights of the BIH Parliamentary Assembly will debate, on Monday, July 6, 2009, the draft-Law on Prevention of Discrimination and the amendments to the text, after which it will present the House of Representatives and House of Nations with a report. Amendments can be submitted by MPs, Committees, the institution that prepared the Law, and the Council of Ministers.

Trade Unions: Sanader’s Resignation is Not a Moral Act

The Union of Independent Trade Unions of Croatia (SSSH) comments that yesterday’s resignation by Prime Minister Ivo Sanader was not a moral act and that it would be “only fair towards the citizens and the electorate” for the Government to admit that it wasn’t able to deal with the accumulated political and economic problems, such as the falling economy and the deteriorating relations with neighbouring countries and EU.

CDCS: Shameful End to Serbia Presidency of Roma Decade

The Centre for Development of Civil Society sent an open letter to Svetozar Čiplić, Serbian minister of human and minority rights, protesting the fact that the Roma settlement in Novi Beograd was fenced off last week, at the time when Serbia transfers the presidency of the Roma Inclusion Decade 2005-2015 to Slovakia.

Artificial Insemination for Unmarried Couples, Too

Jutarnji list daily reports that the Government of Croatia, fearing the draft Law on Artificial Insemination may fall at the Constitutional Court on charges of discrimination, plans to allow couples living out-of-wedlock to have the right to medically assisted insemination.

DjeCa Association: Lecture on Baby-Seat Safety

The DjeCa (Children) association invites all interested parents and future parents to take part in a lecture that will allow them to become certified advisors for baby-seat checks and tests. The lecture will be given by Ana Duff, MD and advisor to the Roda Association for baby-seats and leader of “Safely in the baby-seat” project, on July 26, 2009, in Sarajevo.

Branka Mraović Won the NSHC Refugee Award

On the occasion of June 20, the World Refugee Day, the Novi Sad Humanitarian Centre (NSHC) presented the annual award for prominent refugees and IDPS to artist Branka Mraović, refugee from Vrginmost, Croatia, now living in Dobanovci, near Belgrade. Mraović got the award for her courage in overcoming difficulties and challenges of a life as a refugee.
